Chavela has lived with the effects of polio since she was young. For many years, a horse gave her the freedom to get around and live more independently. Later, after a fall left her unable to walk, her world became much smaller.
Today she lives in a humble home surrounded by her dogs. When Mari and others walked out to visit her, Chavela mentioned that her hair had grown very long because she could not easily leave home to have it cut.
“Do you want me to cut it?”
And right there, outside her home, Mari did. They talked, laughed, cut her hair, and listened to her story. Before leaving, they also quietly surprised Chavela with help for some of her everyday needs.
Chavela repeatedly asked who had sent the money because she wanted to thank them. Mari told her only that it came from “some angels” who wished to remain anonymous.
It was a haircut, a conversation, practical help, and a reminder that she had not been forgotten.
