A neighborhood effort

The chapel we rebuilt together.

Neighbors showed up with contributions, food, beverages, tools, skills, and labor to take on work that was too big for any one person to handle alone.

Community is not only who lives nearby. It is what happens when people decide that a shared need belongs to all of us.

A small neighborhood chapel and the retaining wall surrounding it needed serious attention. The wall had to be rebuilt and reinforced. The chapel needed repairs, cleaning, painting, and a fresh coat of care.

No single person arrived with everything the project required. Instead, neighbors brought what they could. Some contributed materials or money. Some demolished damaged sections, tied steel, moved stone, mixed concrete, built forms, carried buckets, cleaned, repaired, and painted.

Everyone contributed in their own way—and every contribution moved the work forward.

Others cooked, served food, brought cold drinks, kept people encouraged, and made sure the workers were cared for. The meals and laughter mattered just as much as the tools and concrete. They turned a demanding construction project into a true community workday.

Little by little, the retaining wall became strong again. The chapel was repaired and refreshed. More importantly, the work made visible something that had been there all along: neighbors willing to show up for one another.
